The 2017 Elder Law Section Retreat was held in Jamaica from October 5 - 8, 2017. In attendance at the retreat was Chairperson of the Elder Law Section of The Florida Bar, Ellen S. Morris, Esq. The retreat’s purpose was to provide a forum for Elder Law Attorneys in Florida and Jamaica to connect.

Prior to the retreat, when asked about her expectations, Ellen shared this, “I hope to connect with fellow elder law attorneys across Florida and discuss issues that affect our clients on a broad scale, as well as learn about the Jamaican judicial system and determine if some of their procedures and laws should be incorporated into ours for the benefit of our clients and Florida residents.”
Much to her satisfaction, Ellen was given a chance to meet Chief Justice Zaila McCalla at the Comparative Law Seminar at the Supreme Court of Jamaica on October 6th. Justice McCalla is the first woman in Jamaican history to hold the position of most senior Judge and Head of the Judiciary. Called to the bar in 1976, Justice McCalla has held multiple positions in the Courts prior to her appointment as Chief Justice in 2007.
During the retreat, Ellen was most excited to learn about the Jamaican judicial system and how some of their practices can be incorporated into the American judicial system. Ellen has served as an attorney since 1990 after graduating from the University of South Florida in 1989. Ellen’s career is focused on Elder Law as she serves as Chairperson of the Elder Law Section of The Florida Bar. She is also co-chair of the Joint Public Policy Task Force of the Elder Law Section of The Florida Bar and Academy of Florida Elder Law Attorneys (AFELA)
Also included in the three day agenda were an Executive Council Meeting, a visit to the Supreme Court of Jamaica and a trip to Dunn’s Fall.
